Diversity shouldn’t just be a buzzword – here’s why it’s important and how you can embrace it

May is European Diversity Month and 31 May is German Diversity Day. The idea of embracing variety or differences in people, be it in gender and sexual orientation, colour, religion, etc., is an attractive one. The Diversity Charter and Association (Charta der Vielfalt) already has over 500 signatories including major business corporations such as Merck, Sanofi-Aventis, SAP and Deutsche Bahn. Lest you think that diversity is just another buzzword or trend, it should be remembered that very real inequalities and employment difficulties still exist in Europe.

Diversity dimensions that may affect employment

In Germany, women still earn about 20% less than men; the unemployment rate amongst people with disabilities was 11.2% in 2019, much higher than the national average of 3.4%. People who lose their jobs in their 50s often find it hard to be hired again. Some job candidates also think they face discrimination based on their religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or appearance. Some people think that their non-German ethnicity may play a role as well.
